Ah! Harp Music!

This is all Soubs fault!  His latest post features a lassie singing a song in Welsh (or Welch if you prefer) and she is ably accompanied by a Harpist.  I like harp music and had forgotten all about it for a while.  So I am glad he has reminded me.  It is something gentle and quiet to soothe the soul and enable the mind to refresh itself, well sometimes anyway.  I think you will like this.  The Harpist here may well be Irish rather than Welsh but that matters not in music.

Wimbledon has begun.  Once more the BBC is filled from morning to night with tennis!  You know tennis, that game where a ball is hit with a bat over a net and then returned by hitting it with a bat over the net and it is returned and on and on and on and oh so much on, except when the ball hits the net or a player hits the ground with his bat and uses rude words.  This game for girlies, and thousands of them go to south west London, queue all night in the rain, pay stupid money to get in and plonk themselves down on a hill to watch a TV screen!  Why not stay at home and make your mans tea?  It's what you are there for!

This middle class game has many asking "Why so few British players?"  Well it is middle class, to be the tops requires great determination and money, clubs are few, support limited and the chairman if the Lawn Tennis folks gets paid over £600,000 a year.  I can see one way of raising cash to encourage new players of this drab, repetitive, mind numbing game, but the LTA will not approve my idea.  This fortnight of boredom, endlessly spouted on TV, radio and newsprint, happens year in year out to the eternal question, "Will he win it?"  This time Andy is once again the man most likely to become an anti climax and thence return to being a 'Scot' rather than 'British!'  Of course he will not win it, at least three others are miles ahead of him (and one, Nadal, has already gone out) and the trophy will go to them.  After a Sunday afternoon is wasted come Monday and tennis has already been forgotten!  Hooray I say, bring it on!

p.s. Can I point out that 57 people have looked at my Saturday post and the majority have refused to comment. That tells you something!

I was in deepest Canada this afternoon, braving sever weather. When I went to eat in a pretend pub there they had a huge TV on the wall showing... Wimbledon. There's no escape.

I think that's an Irish name for the tune (married in to an Irish family so I know about these things now) but as you say it doesn't matter. We used to sing beautiful folk tunes in school once and I loved them, including Welsh and Irish ones, and they helped me love that kind of music, but I don't think they do it in schools any more. Lovely bluebells, too.

Well, I was all prepared to scream, YUCK, about the harp, but that was A LOT better than what I can remember hearing from harpies in orchestras. I still like harpsichord music much better, though.

Oh, and I can feel your pain over tennis. Well, at least I can understand it. For there is way too much actual action going on with tennis for you genteel futbolers to handle. Furthermore, flopping is frowned upon with a very stern look of indignation.

A, Oh you poor thing! I'm not sure if the severe weather is the end of last winter or the beginning of next in Canada!

Jenny, We used to warble such tunes also. I am not sure it would be acceptable to today's generation unless they have a real musical bent. 'Afton Water' by Burns was a favourite of mine.

Jerry, Hapists singly are better than those in orchestras I reckon. Harpsichords however I dislike. It all sounds the same to me.
'Action' in tennis? Where?

I'm watching Wimbledon...and losing sleep because it's telecast at night here, of course...starts off at 8.30 pm and continues into the wee small hours...making naps in the afternoons when possible necessary!!!

The players are certainly dropping like flies. I was sad to see Nadal go...I'm a huge fan of him. I'm not a fan of Murray...I want to be but I just don't like him. He sooks too much for my liking. I should like Tomic too...after all he is an Aussie, but I can't stand him, either! I wasn't sad to see Azarenka drop out. She "plays" on it a bit, too, I reckon.

Federer has sadly departed as has Hewitt and Tsonga...it's incredible the number of players who have left for one reason or the other.

I guess in a way it's opening up avenues and possibilities for the new, young up and comers to shine.

Lee, You sit up all night watching tennis? You sick woman!

I suspect that Lee just can't help it, my dear Adullamite. For John Newcombe had all of the little Aussie lasses swooning back in the day, and many never recovered.

Jery, John who....?

Not as sick as sitting around watching idiots kick a round football about! ;)

I never swooned over John Newcombe, Jerry...I like him...but he never caused me to swoon!

I am still a big fan of Agassi., too and was sad when he retired. I read his autobiography a few months ago and it is a very good read.

Actually, I'm finding Wimbledon a little boring now with all the good ones gone!
