Friday Mutterings
At last a break from Brexit, or is it? A mass shooting in far off New Zealand might not at first sight be connected to the rich ERG clan lining their pockets via Brexit but the effect of the racist outpourings from their side of the debate results in such actions.
The 'Far Right,' a term that covers a great many who lean that way or take violent action for it, are predominately those who claim a form of white supremacy, a false Christian ideology (merely to oppose Islam), and a desire to chase all foreigners (mostly black ones) out of 'their' country.
Where does the ideology come from?
How does it spread?
In the UK this arises from media misuse. Paul Dacre, who edited the 'Daily Mail' for 25 years spent a great deal of time attacking the EU for reasons of his own, he happily accepts millions in handouts from the EU for his farm up north however. Dacre also made a splurge on immigration, especially black immigration, constantly feeding the people reports of Pakistani born criminals and ensuring large 'ugly' pictures of these criminals were prominent in his media. Slanted reporting, biased commentary, and pandering to the growing number of English who feel bereft for whatever reason and ensuring immigrants and Muslims are seen as responsible, clearly or indirectly ensured a growth of resentment especially in the south of England.
Is 'Dacre' an English name I ask?
Other papers spouted similar views, objective study of the situation replaced by fear and emotion. There are many English who believe all immigrants have been in jail, half are terrorists and they get first choice of houses and live off the dole without having paid a penny in. It has also been claimed the will not sell you alcohol in supermarkets and attempted to ban Christmas, both proven lies spread about via social media.
Add to this real terrorist actions, 9/11 in the USA and several amateur and somewhat successful attempts in the UK by ISIS inspired dafties then it is inevitable that a white nutter will arise and make an attempt to settle scores. There are many willing to sign up.
An abundance of videos by Farage, Moseley and I suspect many US white supremacist groups will provide ideology and instruction to those willing to follow blindly. I can only give thanks that most of us have avoided being dragged into such a mindset. It is very easy to be a follower.
Such outrages bring out the usual responses. Platitudes and denunciations from appropriate leaders follow, as do the public's response of condemnation or support. This may not be outright support just the usual 'whataboutery' mentioning Islamic attacks elsewhere. Murdering innocents for a cause is not justified by murdering innocents for a cause. Hardening opinions will be seen, many will not be seen but will be hidden away ready for the day they will arise. That will not be a good day for the world.
Brexit comes into this as the perpetrator of this crime informs us, remember he is an Australian of English, Scots and Irish ancestry (someone got around then?) operating in New Zealand, blaming Brexit “That it was the British people firing back at mass immigration, cultural displacement and globalism, and that’s a great and wonderful thing,” he said. He has a point, little englanders did not want johnny Foreigner, especially the black ones, coming into their area. UKIP support is very strong in areas with little immigration to be seen. Only now that thousands are losing jobs do these folks realise their mistake. Interesting that as an Australian he did not consider pushing Aborigines or in New Zealand Maori's about as 'mass immigration or cultural displacement' that he may be able to justify though whether Aborigines or Maori's agree is another thing.
There is a danger such attitudes will proliferate, hate is easier to spread that Love. Fear brings hate and the encouragement of immigration over the past fifty years while disregarding the opinions of the native population and indeed regarding them as 'racist' has led to them becoming 'racist!' The world requires thoughtful immigration and border controls not short term emotional ones seen recently. UK, France and the US have over a hundred years mucked about in the middle east and recent wars have resulted from this. ISIS sending a million or two into the EU at one go has encouraged the far right tendency that has always lived in parts of central Europe. Mismanagement here has led to much pain and newspapers fanning flames have not helped.
It is disappointing that the UK government is not in a position to advise friends elsewhere in this situation seeing as they have little idea how to operate the Brexit shambles that lies in front of us now. That resumes next week.

Like a Stranger in a Foreign Country
A picture in the Edinburgh Evening News just now got me thinking. Yes I know this is hard to understand but it is true.
The photo featured a Sikh giving a prize to a youngster for some reason and this brought to mind all the 'Daily Mail' wingers grumbling that their country 'was not what it once was' and 'foreigners rule us now.' This of course the main reason for voting for the disaster of Brexit!
It appeared to me in that photo that the Edinburgh I knew and grew up in has long gone. This is indeed the case, it is over forty years since I lived there and even if no 'foreign Johnny' had arrived since then the place would no longer be the city I knew. In many ways this would be good, in others it is a disaster, but change happens everywhere constantly and we have been part of this. Sometimes we are urging change and ignoring those grumbling against change, then we are the 'Keep it as it was' school objecting to anything that means 'new.'
Sadly I thought I cannot grumble about such things. The Christian must view the world as a temporary dwelling, not a permanent home therefore the world we wish to keep must be jettisoned because holding on to that is a form of idolatry. We seek 'our' world, the safe happy place in which we are content, forgetting that Jesus died because that world was as corrupt as all other parts of the world, and we enjoyed some of that corruption but excusing it as 'part of our culture.'
Our culture must now be Gods culture not the worlds. Scots culture was about the best in the world, if you ignore football violence, sectarian behaviour and drunkenness that is. Christians can no longer be part of the 'best culture in the world' as it is not actually the 'best thing for the world,' only Jesus is.
The point somewhere in my muddled mind is that I can easily object to Edinburgh being filled with Sikhs or Muslims, Hindus or any other kind but in the end I can only deal with 'people' not 'types of people.' My Edinburgh was only in my head, my personal experience, and while I can give thanks for being brought up in such a good environment I ought to be living in a better world, the one Jesus offers not the world in my mind. Edinburgh of course has always had invaders arriving. The Sikhs have been there for almost a hundred years, many come via the Port of Leith for business or diplomatic reasons or to attend the university or Medical School so incomers are not new in Auld Reekie.
The Old Testament has much to say about welcoming strangers whether they live amongst you or are just passing through, Middle Eastern hospitality demands a favourable response ought we to do anything else? Some Christians however have failed in this many joining UKIP and such parties, in an attempt to stop the nation they know becoming a different nation, the 'It is not my country any more' attitude. They are right, it has never been their country it has always belonged to God and he gives it to whoever he will. The Christian must live in a tent like a nomad he has no permanent home on this earth. The world in which he lives can never be 'his country' and always be what he wishes it to be, it will never be what he wants anyway lets face it, life is constantly disappointing us, life will never be what we wish it to be.
Of course I am a foreigner is a strange land...

Dreich Bank Holiday
Bank Holiday usually indicates dull clouds and wet streets, this bank holiday has therefore not disappointed as it is gray, wet and dreich. Not that I care as the virus has left me looking for sleep most of the time. Sunday was a bright day but I watched it from my bed, except when I left to watch the football. The brute of a virus hangs around today also and tomorrow the kids will fill the museum. I'll get them some time off school the week after if I cough enough. I ventured as far as the bins this afternoon suddenly realising how many adverts are found on the shop wall next door. It reminded me of those Victorian photos when such advertising abounded everywhere, clearly uncontrolled at the time. It makes me wonder if the council notice, or care to notice, whether this breaks some by-law. I hope they do not notice as he is a good man struggling to make his business work. Without the ads it is possible the town could not operate properly.
The good book says we should not rejoice when our enemy falls, that is not the heart of God in action, however I allowed myself a moment or two of giggling. You see Hibernian, who I may have mentioned before, played their 'play-off' game against Hamilton Accies on Sunday and were in an unbeatable position. It was impossible for them to lose their two goal advantage against a team from the lower division. Yet they did! Worse, they went on to lose a penalty shoot out and all this after laughing out loud at our relegation, caused as we all admit by mismanagement leading to administration. Hibernian's talented players have by sheer willpower crawled from Fifth place in the league to the lower relegation! Oh how we laughed! Now I am not one to taunt the Hibbys when they are down - but I managed it! It fair cheered me up and wore me out! They are not speaking to me today, it's a giggle innit?

Boring Tired Post
Nigel Helps Police with their Enquires
There is no doubt UKIP can rejoice in their success in last nights poll. They have touched the heart of England, and I mean 'England,' in similar vein to the Scottish National Party in Scotland. In many an Englishman's heart their concerns have been pushed aside for immigrants arriving on these shores, for which the indigenous population have been called 'racist,' their dislike of same sex marriage has been ignored in spite of so many objections, and 'Human Rights' being abused by thugs and murderers and Islamic preachers has been a bone of contention often raised but ignored also. In the eyes of the English voter he is a stranger in his own land. He sees the Scots given preferential treatment, the 'Daily Mail' says so, benefits cheats abounding while his work is underpaid. On top of this the EU costs him cash and the politicians spend more time shoveling cash to their friends rather than dealing with the Englishman's needs.
He knows all this is true because the right wing media, the one he reads, tells him so!
Daily he reads of millions of Romanian, Bulgarian, Polish, African, Afghans amongst the many arriving, here receiving payouts greater than his wage, houses better than his and if he objects he is called 'Racist.' The paper speaks daily of EU waste, fiddling MP's and local authorities and makes clear he is the one paying for it all. The Englishman, who sees his home as his castle is frightened by this.
The media intended him to vote Conservative by peddling all this misinformation, half truths and downright lies. Instead along comes an everday bloke like Farange who speaks their mind, drinks a pint, smokes, and tells the EU what he thinks of them. "He is one of us!" they cry!
Of course he isn't. Farage is another well educated rich man who knows how to play the system, a rebelrouser who shouts the Englishman's wishes. Those wishes are for fair treatment and a government that listens to them. That does not exist today.
The Scots cannot understand Nigel and his party because it is an English party, not a UK one. Scots have a more egalitarian approach to life, this comes from the hardship of past years. The use of utilities for the whole nation not just a few shareholders goes down well up north, aiding the needy is a part of society. The Scots are more left of centre than the English they are predominately right of centre. Add to this politicians from well to do backgrounds, with Oxbridge accents, no life experience to speak off, people full of ambition to be number one or make the most out of the job and we have a parliament out of touch with the real world.
No wonder desperate people, lied to daily, see Nigel Farage as a man who can speak for them.
UKIP, that should in my view be EIP, have shaken the parties, especially the Conservatives. There is every chance Nigel and his men could be in the House of Commons in a years time and that will be fun. The response of the various parties after a result in which they have been hammered is always the same, no matter how good or bad the spokesmen always tell how well their party has done and just how much support there is for their policies. I am reminded of the leader of the Scottish Communist party appearing on TV in 1968. That year the Scottish National Party made a huge breakthrough by winning something like 325 seats at the local elections in Scotland. The Communists had one man elected in somewhere far to the north, Inverness I think. The Communist leader took this opportunity to read into the election of one man as a sign that "The Scottish people are turning to us as they realise Communism is the way to go." The 325 or so SNP seats were ignored.
The party spokesmen have been floundering today, blame has been sent around and only one thing remain the same, the media accept no blame for anything at any time! The media, desperate for money and supporters of the Conservative Party have inflamed the English nation. This has hurt their party dearly. From tomorrow the papers will do their best to sell to the UKIP support while not hurting Cameron's chances in 2015, such two faced action is not beyond them.
Will Farage really change the nation? Time alone will tell, but as Scotland will vote for independence in September only England, an Wales and Northern Ireland need worry.
Did I vote for Nigel? Don't be silly!

Democracy in Action
The voting paper had two folds in it, opened out it was over a foot long, all the major parties and quite a few loony's were on offer. "Right," said I as the young ladies at the desk proffered the paper and gave instructions on its use,"Where is the Scottish Nationalist?" One of the girls sighed quietly. I fear she believed me. The choice entered with a big 'X' in the usual manner of a Hibernian footballer signing his name I vacated the premises. Voting takes place in the Museum Hall and my Big Boss who is in charge of the operation informed me the day had been light (about ten thirty) and no-one ventured over the door until half an hour had passed. Rather unusual for here even allowing for the increasing number of postal votes. The EU election does not go down well.
The main parties were all represented and I did not want any off them. However a vote for UKIP, racists in suits, does influence government policy as the Conservatives are terrified they will lose out to them. Indeed the right-wing media has spent the last weeks attacking UKIP at every opportunity but offering absolutely no Tory policies! That tells you the fear at Conservative HQ. A while back I wrote to the local member of parliament and in the middle of the letter I mentioned "..it was brave of you to vote for the 'Bedroom tax' when UKIP as so strong in this area..." he did not reply! Personally I think we should vote for UKIP, I believe in England for the English! The best thing for them to do would be to give £250,000 to everyone else and send them back to their own country, but wait until after September.
Is it not funny how in Afghanistan people queued for hours to vote, knowing that bombs could explode at any time, rifle fire could break out and death was minutes away yet in the UK such an important vote leaves us bored or disinterested. People died in various parts of the British Isles over many years to get us the right to select which lying rogue will represent us, or here put their nose in the trough, yet we stay at home. Always vote, but I would like a 'None of the above' added at the bottom.
Possibly the insistence of the Police helicopter to hover over my head when I was
Ha! Acting suspiciously. Here is the reason and naturally he deafens us while watching something a mile away, typical! Nobody arrested and thousands spent. Is it cheaper to put police on the ground I wonder?

Bank Holiday Monday Again
There can be no doubt immigration is a big issue today. However who knows what the actual numbers of immigrants actually happens to be? Government figures cannot be trusted, even by governments, UKIP or any other lobby group certainly will not tell the truth, and the only fact is that the entire UK is overcrowded. However, once Scotland becomes independent you will note only England, and Wales, become crowded, Scotland having masses of highlands bereft of life bar English incomers looking for a better world. UKIP remains an England First Party, probably some members are racist, some certainly a bit loopy, however many similar remain within the Conservative Party but the papers do not mention that, certainly not during the lead up to an election.
The European Election is with us in 20 or so days. We ave the opportunity to send people into obscurity on vast wages, huge expenses, long hours of wasting everybody's time, and changing not one iota of life for you and me as far as I am aware up to this point. The EU is such a farce. The accounts have never been signed off for 20 years, nobody knows where the money goes, few if any care or understand the financial side, yet nothing is done! Talk is loud now, action unseen tomorrow. Laws are passed, ignored by France, yet important here! It is time for a rethink. Let us work with Europe, but not in a Federal state. Let us trade, help, aid, develop the poorer parts, but first let us remove the millions earning vast sums in Strasbourg, Brussels and wherever else they dwell. I'm thinking of voting either 'Green' or 'UKIP,' as both would serve them right and keep them away from us!
Being a bank holiday, in which everyone bar supermarkets and greedy shops take the long weekend off, there was nothing happening today. This made no difference whatsoever to this small town! Actually it does, most shops shut, businesses closed and many took advantage of a reasonably warm day to clean the car, go visit in-laws, or even have a happy time. I did nothing, so no change there. The bright blue sky caused me to cycle up the old railway however, puffing up that slope far more than any F5 engine ever did I can tell you.
Pah! You call that steam!
Clearly this is doing me good health wise, or so they say, but it did not feel this way at the time. There were few about, which always make it worth while. The morning sun makes me want to take pictures but there was nothing but this aged gate, once entrance to a busy coal depot, the only interesting object on view. I can tell it bores you, it did little for me. However this depot must have been important in the coal fired days. Every house required coal, all stations along the line had similar layouts busy with bags of coal being transferred to lorries and taken to almost every house in the area. I say almost as with all the woods around in the past I suspect many chopped their own for the fire, saving money and keeping fit. Today we just turn the switch and grumble at the power companies ripping us off. Where are all the old coalmen now? Dead I suppose. Any living will be well into their eighties, probably older, but I suspect still fit! Jobs come and go with the change of lifestyle yet as far as I know few tears were shed for coalmen who lost out to the Clean Air Act. Yet for well over a hundred years such men kept the nation warm, industry working and when stocks were low suffered the abuse for something they could do little about. Now they are forgotten. So many old jobs once commonplace have gone in fifty years. Factories, railway sidings, once the employer of thousands now turned into small shops, scout huts or out of town supermarkets. How quickly we forget.
Do you know muscles used rarely hurt when used? As I write this rubbish my muscles are informing me of this very fact. When I rise in the morrow I wonder if they will remind me then also.....?

Fussing about Haze
The daffodils boobed their heads slowly in the early morning breeze, a blackbird took fright as I passed but not before tugging a three inch worth of worm from the earth, and the sun fought hard to break through the haze brought by the chilly east current. Few ventured out bar those opening up their businesses or reporting for duty with little in the way of mirth revealed in their faces. Dog walkers passed unsmilingly, the dogs expectant of adventure in the fields as if this was a new adventure rather than a repeat of many previous days, from the main road the rush of traffic spoiled the atmosphere both romantic and physical, the hum of tyres racing past in the distance.
I stopped to picture the haze in the only wide open spot available, the sun shone weakly high above brightening the land in spite of the pollution attempting to block its progress. To my left a blue car packed a small tough looking wee dog into the back and motored away, the engine quiet as if afraid to wake the sleeping houses across the fields. Suddenly I noticed a pouting adolescent heading for school stop to produce a bright yellow phone from his pocket and linger, still pouting, as he caught up on important news. I resisted asking what sort of lad carries a yellow phone in case I broke some law and was more than uninterested in whatever his news may be. As I forced the bike into gear amidst much clanking and scraping I noticed a large Vauxhall containing a woman and two smaller children parked in an out of the way place. Quite what she was doing there I know not, it crossed my mind she awaited the school opening as it was yet long before eight, maybe she just liked rugby fields?
Dodging one dogwalker and awaiting another as she persuaded her 'Scottie' to avoid walking through glass left by the kiddies the night before I headed slowly homewards. The haze remained, broken occasionally during the day by brighter patches of sunlight which never quite gathered the strength to overcome it, yet much less than what occurred yesterday.
News people require something sensational otherwise they feel let down. Yesterday the main story was the deep haze hanging over the south of England. The thick haze covering London was shown repeatedly by the news media, pictures filled the papers and the radio news talked of little else. How these 'journalists' enjoyed this. The pictures of London, and it is always London the picture, did indeed show the haze however it was not so thick here and TV pictures can be manipulated, and much talk and hot air was heard debating the causes. There appeared to be three, everyday pollution from vehicles and daily life, clouds arriving from the east and would you believe sand blown all the way up from the Sahara desert. Pictures of such sand were shown as it lay on cars and windows, murky shots of buildings in the distance suffering this outrage appeared, and indeed there is no doubt something was in the air yesterday, something above the usual defilement. There again maybe that was just me doing the washing and the aroma of 'Daz' was filling my throat.
The Sahara does indeed send sand to the UK on occasion, SKY news informed us it regularly sends its contents over to the Brazilian Rain Forests helping to ensure the continuation of such forests. "This," said the man,"Shows nature taking care of itself." I thought it pedantic to ask why 'nature' had not taken care of the forests and jungle that once stood where the Sahara sand now lies, but thought that may upset him.
The debate has continued at a lesser pace as western winds arrive tomorrow to clear the air. It has caused the usual talk, this 'natural' event, but as far as I can see there is no movement in actually doing anything about the worst element of the haze, car fumes! No politician will suggest 'Electric only cars in cities,' nobody will suggest developing and investing in bus and train travel to limit pollution, certainly not while an election is being held in 2015. Yet those dying from chest complaints, asthma and other problems exacerbated by the haze might vote for those that do suggest it, and then actually do something about it. What's that? You heard no such suggestion from those able to do something? I am surprised about that.
So the media has had its fill of pollution news, interspersed by the Clegg v Farage debate. However as Clegg will be removed from leadership of his party after the election, if indeed he retains his seat, and Farage at best will gain only handfuls of seats from the Tories the debate was at best irrelevant. Since Cameron took power four years ago they say the Conservative Party has lost half its membership. His same sex marriage ideas, the ignoring party wishes and dumping unwanted dolly bird candidates on local parties was never going to win friends with that lot. So UKIP, Farages anti Europe party, will now gain some of their support. This has already happened at the last local elections as a warning to Cameron that went unheeded, such as voted then may not vote UKIP, they certainly will not vote Cameron! His job also is on the line. Two real debates remain, Cameron and Milliband the leader of the failing Labour Party, and Cameron, as Prime Minister debating with Alec Salmond the Scottish First Minister. Cameron knows he would be thrashed by Salmond, a proper politician, this then will never be allowed to happen. By 2015 of course Scotland may have lost interest in an English election (Westminster cares little for Wales and Northern Ireland also) and be preparing to go her own way.
