Fifa, and their world cups, have always been surrounded by corruption, so it is not unusual to discover such corruption is continuing today. This year's favourite is of course Argentina. It is likely the corrupt Fifa chairman wishes Messi and company to be in the final in Miami as this will increase the worth of the TV coverage, the adverts that accompany it. With Messi himself playing well the coverage increases. Football loses out to corruption again.
Of course Fifa has always been corrupt.
We remember the fuss when previous leaders have sent money, for football development,' to a variety of smaller nations in Asia, West Indies and Africa, which resulted in support for the president of Fifa. Some people went to jail over this.
During the year 1957 one Stanley Rous became the man in charge. This Englishman led Fifa for some time. Coincidentally, during 1958 England were awarded the World Cup for 1966. A surprise to one and all. That World Cup saw England play all their games on a plastic pitch, a pitch that opponents grumbled at. We also saw Portugal, expecting to play the semi-final in Middleborough given 24 hours to change venue to Wembley in London. Eusabio will remember the bruises he received from one 'Nobby' Stiles that evening.
The final later was also to provide English corruption.
It is difficult to imagine how a Soviet Linesman standing 40 yards from the goal could not see that Geoff Hurts shot had not crossed the line when I, from 400 miles away, could see it had not! It was also noticeable that the fourth goal was accompanied by an invasion of thugs onto the field, yet play did not stop as it ought.
England won, but corruption won more.
I look forward to the hypocritical whining after Mexico beat England this weekend.
