I think they are trying to appeal to folks who don't really like secondhand stuff and prefer to pretend it is new. One of the best charity shops around here in British Heart Foundation which we use as a lending library, with the bonus of paying a small sum to buy the book and then making a donation to healthy hearts by giving it back to resell.
